About Laser Hair Removal
Why Choose Laser Hair Removal?
Traditional hair removal techniques, such as shaving, tweezing, and waxing, provide only temporary relief. Electrolysis, although it can result in permanent reduction of hair growth, often requires years of ongoing and frequently painful treatments. Allergic reactions and ingrown hairs are also common side effects of these hair removal methods.
The Coherent Lightsheer Diode Laser? will safely remove unwanted facial and body hair by selectively targeting the pigment inside the hair shaft. The laser heats the pigment of the hair to destroy the follicle without damaging the delicate pores and structures of the skin. The tip of the laser will also target multiple hairs at once, unlike electrolysis or tweezing which can only remove one hair at a time.
Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent?
Yes. Clinical trials have shown that hair follicles successfully destroyed in the active phase cannot re-grow because the stem cells of the hair are no longer there to produce further growth. However, this is not a guarantee of being hair-free for life. Hormonal changes, shock or extreme stress could possibly stimulate previously unproductive follicles to produce completely new growth. This is not to be confused with re-growth of the previously destroyed follicles.
What can I expect during a treatment?
Your expert technician will apply a cool gel to your skin and you will be given a pair of dark glasses to protect your eyes from the light. She will then gently apply the smooth tip of the laser handpiece to the treatment area, quickly and evenly applying pulses of light to the unwanted hair. No painful waxing is necessary beforehand, and there is no need to grow out the hair first. Anesthesia is not required, and most individuals experience no more than a slight stinging sensation as the laser pulses are applied.
Laser hair removal is non-invasive, and safely removes unwanted body hair without damaging the delicate pores and structures of the skin. The treatment time will depend upon the size of the area being treated. Facial and bikini areas are usually completed in fewer than 30 minutes, while legs and larger areas will require more time. Following your treatment, your technician will apply a cool compress of witch hazel to help reduce any redness or swelling. Any redness or swelling is temporary, and will diminish over the next few days.
Will laser hair removal work for me?
The best candidates for laser hair removal are fair skinned with darker hair. The best results have been achieved on darker, coarse hair, but other factors may influence the treatment process and are best evaluated during your free consultation. At your consultation, the technician may also try a small “test patch? on your skin to help determine whether you will achieve the results you want.
Unfortunately, not everyone is an excellent candidate for laser hair removal. Generally speaking, the best candidates are men and women with black or brown hair. Because the laser targets the pigment in the hair shaft, white, gray and blonde hair (those with less pigment) are less likely to absorb the laser energy. Also, darker skin types pose a risk of the laser energy being absorbed by the skin and not the hair follicle. However, this does not necessarily mean that laser hair removal will not be effective in these situations. As with any treatment, a consultation will help determine the best course of action for your hair colour and skin type.
How many treatments will I need?
Hair grows in cycles. The laser is only effective on hair in its active growing phase. At any one time, there will only be certain hairs in that growing phase. This means that consistent treatments are absolutely necessary for the best possible results.
The number of treatments required depends upon your skin, hair coloring, coarseness of the hair, and density per treatment area. Everyone requires at least two to three treatments since the process is only effective on hair follicles during their active growing phase. Additional treatments will be necessary to treat other follicles when they re-enter the growth phase and produce new growth.
With each treatment, you will see a reduction in the amount of re-growth. Clients typically require between three and five treatments, and most clients find that they no longer need to shave between appointments.
Is laser hair removal painful?
Clients who have had electrolysis prior to laser treatment agree that laser treatment is much less painful than electrolysis. For some areas, our clients compare the feeling to a light snap of an elastic band against the skin. For other areas, they say that it is hardly noticeable. If you are concerned about discomfort, a topical anaesthetic cream (EMLA) can be applied to the treatment area one hour before your appointment.
What will I look like after my treatment?
Clients typically experience slight redness and swelling immediately after treatment. The intensity of these symptoms varies from person to person and dissipates over a 24 to 48 hour period. At the time of treatment, some of the hairs will be removed and, within five to seven days, you may notice the appearance of stubble. This stubble is actually the treated hair being expelled by the follicle. This hair will continue to fall out gradually over the next one to three weeks.
Should I do anything to prepare for my treatment?
For one month prior to your appointment, do not wax or tweeze the hairs that are to be treated. You should also avoid direct sun exposure and tanning both before and after your treatment.
Hair should be visible for your consultation, but should be shaved 2 days prior to your appointment. Finally, the treatment area should be clean and free of all skin care products.
Are there any instructions that I should follow after my treatment?
Sun exposure and tanning should be avoided following any laser treatment. This can be accomplished by applying a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. The treated areas should also be handled gently, avoiding the use of AHA cleansers or topical acne preparations. If necessary, a topical antibiotic such as Polysporin (an over the counter topical antibiotic) can be applied. Your technician will provide you with complete aftercare instructions at the time of your treatment.
What are the contra-indicators for laser hair removal?
Contra-indicators are factors that could adversely affect your suitability for laser hair removal. They include:
- Recently tanned skin
- White, gray or blonde hair
- Chemotherapy/radiation treatment
- Certain prescription medications
- Pregnant or considering pregnancy
- Chronic skin conditions such as eczema or vitiligo
- Use of Accutane within the past six months
If any of these circumstances apply to you, laser hair removal may not be a suitable treatment option. Your technician will complete a confidential medical history chart with you on the day of your consultation to address any contra-indicators or other concerns you may have.
How do I get started?
We encourage you to call for your FREE consultation or to book a consultation and treatment time together. A consultation is required before any treatment to ensure that you are a suitable candidate for laser hair removal and to discuss the treatment process. At the consultation, your technician will also answer any questions that you may have.
What areas can be treated?
Microdermabrasion can be performed on any of the body. While the face and neck are the most popular treatment areas, many clients opt for microdermabrasion on the hands, arms, back, legs, knees and thighs.
Why should I have microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion can help minimize fine lines, non-inflammatory acne, age spots, blotchiness, sun damage and rough, course textured skin. It is an excellent treatment for anyone who is looking to improve their skin’s clarity, texture, tone, and overall youthfulness.
How does it work?
Microdermabrasion works by exfoliating the skin to remove skin abnormalities or signs of aging such as fine lines, wrinkles or creases. Your technician will use a small handheld device, positioned at a precise angle, to gently “sand? the skin’s surface with delicate micro-crystals. These fine micro-crystals are simultaneously vacuumed up, loosening and removing dead skin cells to reveal smoother, younger-looking skin with greater clarity and elasticity.
Will it hurt?
No. Microdermabrasion is both gentle and painless. You will feel only a gentle vibration on the skin. In fact, many clients comment that the treatment feels quite soothing.
How many treatments will I need?
You will see an improvement in your skin’s tone and clarity after just one treatment. However, microdermabrasion works most effectively when it is performed in a series of four to six treatments at two-to-three week intervals. Your expert technician will help determine the best treatment plan for you, based on your age, budget, and the condition of your skin.
What skin types can be treated?
People with rosacea are not candidates for microdermabrasion. Otherwise, the treatment is suitable for all skin types and colours including sensitive skin.
Can I resume my normal activities after my treatment?
Yes. Microdermabrasion is also known as the “lunch hour face lift? because it yields visible results with no downtime. Following your procedure, you can immediately resume your regular activities.
Pixel Laser Resurfacing
What is Pixel?
Pixel is an innovative new laser treatment that helps counteract years of sun damage or acne scarring, dramatically improving the tone and texture of your skin. It works by creating thousands of microscopic perforations without disturbing any of the surrounding tissue. These “micro-injury? sites (about 15 ? 20 per cent of the treatment area) stimulate the growth of new collagen. As collagen regenerates, your skin tightens and texture improves. Because the skin surrounding the perforations remains in tact, Pixel allows for a much faster recovery time than deep chemical peels or other more invasive skin tightening measures.
What areas can be treated?
Any area of your body can be treated by Pixel. The most common areas are those most exposed to the damaging effects of sunlight such as the face, neck, and back of the hands.
How many treatments will I need?
In general, clients require three treatments at 30-day intervals to achieve optimal results. Most clients will opt for a touch-up treatment after six to twelve months to help maintain a healthy glow.
How long will it take to recover?
You should expect a couple of days of down-time due to redness and flaking. This is normal and should resolve within a few days. Most clients choose to apply our prescribed ointment for this short period and will refrain from wearing make-up. By day three, most clients have resumed all normal activities and any remaining redness can be easily covered up with mineral make-up.
What is Laser 360?
Give us 60 days and we’ll take off 10 years! Laser 360 is an exciting new aesthetic treatment that combines three revolutionary technologies into a single, customized treatment plan for softer, younger looking skin in just 60 days. The treatment plan consists of three sets of treatments using three different technologies, performed in 20-day intervals.
The first technology is the intense pulsed light (IPL). This technology uses pulses of light to even out your skin colour and reduce tiny broken blood vessels and other colour irregularities. Next, the Near-infrared uses deep heating to firm loose skin, resulting in a more youthful, contoured appearance. Lastly, the Pixel is used to improve your skin’s texture and tone, and to tighten fine lines and wrinkles.
Using these three different light sources on the same day, one series every 20 days, completed in 60 days, Laser 360 will leave you with dramatically improved skin that is firmer, smoother and younger-looking.
Botox™ and Juvaderm™
What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is the only product of its kind to specifically address the facial muscles that cause lines and wrinkles. It targets what are known as “dynamic wrinkles,? which are caused by repeated muscular contractions such as frowning and squinting. BOTOX® Cosmetic, an injectable treatment derived from purified protein, works by relaxing the muscles that cause these dynamic wrinkles, giving your face a more relaxed and refreshed appearance.
Is it safe?
Absolutely. BOTOX® Cosmetic has been licensed in Canada since 1990 as a safe and effective treatment for a variety of medical conditions. In 2001, Health Canada approved BOTOX® Cosmetic for wrinkle therapy, and it has been proven to be very safe through extensive research and testing.
How long does the treatment last?
The effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic usually last from four to six months. After repeat treatments, the effects may begin to last longer.
When will I see results?
In most cases, clients notice results within two to three days after a treatment.
Where can BOTOX® Cosmetic be used?
BOTOX® Cosmetic can be used to treat lines or creases on the forehead as well as “crow’s feet” around the eyes and “frown feet.”
What are the possible side effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic?
A possible side effect is bruising, which is temporary, localized to the area of injection. Should you experience any temporary bruising, it can be easily covered with makeup.
What is JUVÉDERM™ Injectable Gel?
JUVÉDERM™ is a soft injectable gel filler that can help refresh and restore a youthful appearance. It is primarily comprised of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring compound in the body, which combines with the water in your skin to instantly restore lost volume and reduce lines and wrinkles. Hyaluronic injections have also been shown to stimulate collagen production.
What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a natural, complex sugar found in all living cells, and is an important component of the skin. Hyaluronic acid retains water like a sponge, absorbing more then 1,000 times its weight. This helps to attract and maintain water in the skin, providing hydration while increasing its volume and density. Where skin had previously been “sunken in,” you will see a restoration of smooth, full, vibrant texture.
Where can JUVÉDERM™ Injectable Gel be used?
JUVÉDERM™ can be used on the following areas:
- Smile lines
- Lip border
- Chin and jaw
- Lines around the mouth
Is treatment with JUVÉDERM™ painful?
Our medical personnel will inject the JUVÉDERM™ into the skin using a fine needle to reduce injection discomfort. The treatment area can also be numbed to further minimize discomfort. Because of its smooth consistency, the gel can be administered very easily.
What are the possible side effects?
JUVÉDERM™ Injectable Gel is generally well tolerated. Possible side effects are mild to moderate and are relatively short lived (fewer than seven days). These may include temporary skin reactions such as redness, tenderness and bruising, which can easily be covered with light makeup. The treatment requires minimal down time. Most people return to their normal routines immediately.
What is full face rejuvenation?
As we age, our face slowly exhibits the “three Ds? of aging: Deterioration (wrinkles and texture change), Descent (droopiness of the skin) and Deflation (a loss of volume). The use of JUVÉDERM™ Injectable Gel, in combination with BOTOX® Cosmetic, can provide a safe, gentle and effective approach to overall facial rejuvenation.
The combination of BOTOX® Cosmetic, to treat upper facial lines such as crow’s feet, frown lines and forehead lines, along with JUVÉDERM™ to treat volume loss and folds in the mid to lower face, can provide you with a long-lasting, more youthful look.
What areas can be treated?
Accent Body Sculpting can be used to treat loose, sagging or wrinkled skin anywhere on the body. The most common treatment areas are:
- Face and Neck
How does Accent Body Sculpting work?
Accent Body Sculpting uses radio frequency energy which causes the water molecules in your skin to twist and vibrate. This motion produces friction that creates heat at very specific areas deep within the inner layers of your skin (dermis). This heat generates a focused “wound healing? response which stimulates the production of new collagen and improves skin surface texture. As a result, wrinkled, sagging tissue is replaced by firmer, younger-looking skin.
Will it hurt?
Accent Body Sculpting is gentle, non-invasive, and safe. You should experience minimal or no discomfort; however, this varies from client to client and depends on the depth of the treatment. If it ever feels too warm, we’ll turn it off but continue to slide the chilled tip along your skin until you are comfortable enough to resume treatment.
How many treatments will I need?
Generally, you will see results after just one or two treatments, with major improvements occurring after six to eight sessions. Best of all, skin tightening and body contouring will continue for up to six months after treatment concludes.
What skin types can be treated with the Accent laser?
Because Accent Body Sculpting uses radio waves instead of light, it can be safely performed on any skin type including recently tanned skin. This gives Accent a significant advantage over lasers and other light-emitting devices which are often restricted to lighter skin.
